Chron.com: “Dynamo top Sporting Kansas City to reach MLS Cup finals”

Article excerpt:

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — As his teammates carried the Eastern Conference championship trophy to the southeast corner of Livestrong Sporting Park, injured midfielder Brad Davis hurriedly hopped along behind on crutches.

His marvelous season likely over because of the right quadriceps strain he suffered in the first half Sunday afternoon, Davis caught up, dumped the crutches, grabbed the trophy and lifted it toward the Dynamo supporters who had made the trip to Kansas.

To the roar of his teammates and about 150 supporters celebrating the Dynamo’s 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference final, Davis hopped on his left leg and danced with the championship cup long after most of the sellout crowd of 20,839 had exited.

“Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” he screamed while maintaining his balance on the left leg that carried his team for much of the season with a career-high and league-leading 16 assists.

The Dynamo went from the low of losing their top MLS MVP candidate to the high of earning a berth in the MLS Cup final Nov. 20 against the Los Angeles Galaxy, who defeated Real Salt Lake 3-1 late Sunday.

The two-time MLS Cup champions are back in the final for the first time since they won their second consecutive championship in 2007.

“I was crushed for (Davis),” forward Brian Ching said. “He’s had an MVP season. He’s the reason why we’re at this point in the season. To see him go down kind of took a little life out of us for the rest of that half, unfortunately.

“But having said that, no one piece is bigger and more important than the entire team. The guys stepped up. We’ve done that over the past two months, and hopefully we’ll continue to do that.”
