As the Dynamo play their inaugural season at BBVA Compass Stadium, with the first night game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Portland, they’ll try to join the 2003-2004 Rockets as the only professional team in Houston to reach the playoffs in the first season at a new arena.

As players exit the air-conditioned locker rooms and turn into the tunnel on their way to the BBVA Compass Stadium pitch, they quickly feel the warmth that has long been associated with playing outdoor sports in Houston.

They are reminded of the heat again when they look up at the large banner that greets them.

Below two pictures of the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup championship celebrations and to the right of the Dynamo’s logo, the 10-foot by 10-foot banner reads:

“The heat is our advantage,” Dynamo forward Brian Ching said. “It always has been, and I think it always will be. The teams dread coming here, and it’s a mental thing. We give them reminders all the time.

“The heat, as much as it takes out of us, we’re used to it. We don’t let it affect us the way (it does) other teams coming in here.”
